Holly Egan’s Emotional Journey to the AFLW: Following Her Sister’s Footsteps

Holly Egan, recently drafted into the AFLW, had a moment she’ll never forget as she eagerly waited for her name to be called during the 2024 Telstra AFLW Draft. Surrounded by her closest family and friends, Egan was filled with a mix of excitement and nerves. Selected at pick 34 by the Fremantle Dockers, the moment brought immense relief and gratitude to the young footballer. “I’m still in shock,” Holly shared. “It’s all sinking in slowly. Hearing my name was such a relief, and I felt so emotional and happy to have finally made it.”

Holly’s AFLW journey is particularly special, as she follows in the footsteps of her older sister, Grace Egan. Grace has made a name for herself in the league, having played three seasons at Carlton before joining Richmond for the past three years. Holly spoke warmly about Grace’s influence on her development as a footballer. “Grace was the first girl in our family to take up footy, and she’s been a huge inspiration for me,” Holly explained. “She’s grown so much, both on and off the field, and the knowledge she’s shared has been invaluable. Everything she’s taught me, I’ve taken on board, and that’s been a big factor in helping me reach this point.”

The draft night was an emotional milestone for Holly, filled with a blend of anticipation and joy. As the picks climbed into the 30s, Holly admitted to feeling the pressure. “I was starting to wonder if I’d have to wait all night, but the moment my name was announced, it was just an incredible sense of relief,” she recalled. Supported by her loved ones, she described the night as a celebration of hard work, passion, and family support.

Holly’s journey to the AFLW was fueled by her determination and the example set by her sister. She credits Grace for sparking her drive to excel in football. “Seeing Grace’s success pushed me to chase my dream. Her encouragement and support have made such a difference in my career,” Holly said. The sisters share a special bond, and it’s clear Grace’s impact on Holly extends far beyond the game itself.

Now, Holly joins fellow draftees Georgie Brisbane and Evie Parker in preparing for their transition from Victoria to Western Australia. Together, they embark on a new chapter with the Fremantle Dockers, ready to make their mark in the AFLW. Holly’s story is one of resilience, gratitude, and inspiration, showcasing the power of family and determination in achieving lifelon
