Collingwood Football Club Major Trade Deal for Dan Houston

Collingwood Football Club Major Trade Deal for Dan Houston

Collingwood Football Club has successfully completed a significant trade involving Dan Houston, securing him in a three-way deal with Port Adelaide and the Gold Coast SUNS. As part of the trade, Collingwood also gains a pick in the upcoming 2024 AFL National Draft, while Joe Richards and John Noble are moving to new clubs. This exchange signifies a strategic shift for the Pies as they strengthen their lineup for the future.

Houston, who has been a key player for Port Adelaide, has signed a six-year contract with Collingwood. The 27-year-old defender has an impressive AFL career, having played 168 games over eight seasons. He has also been recognized with two All-Australian selections (2023 and 2024) and was part of the 22under22 team in 2019. Houston’s leadership qualities and consistent performance, finishing in the top three of Port Adelaide’s Best and Fairest for three consecutive years, make him a valuable addition to Collingwood’s defensive unit. His return to Melbourne will also reunite him with former teammates from his Oakleigh Chargers days, such as Darcy Moore, Jordan De Goey, and Lachie Sullivan.

In the trade, Joe Richards departs Collingwood and heads to Port Adelaide. Richards, who was drafted by Collingwood in 2022, has played nine AFL games and made his debut in Round 9 of the same year. While his time at Collingwood was brief, he expressed gratitude for the club’s support, sharing his appreciation for the opportunity to play at the highest level. He acknowledged the team’s coaches, staff, and players, and emphasized the lifelong friendships he formed during his two years with the Pies.

Another part of the deal sees John Noble head to the Gold Coast SUNS. Noble, a seasoned player with 112 AFL games under his belt, requested the trade to be closer to his family. Having been drafted by Collingwood in 2019, Noble achieved a significant milestone in 2024, celebrating his 100th AFL game. Noble expressed heartfelt thanks to Collingwood for providing him the opportunity to showcase his talent and build his career. He also acknowledged the club’s coaches, medical, and administrative staff, and emphasized his lasting ties to the team despite his departure.

Collingwood’s Head of Football Strategy, Justin Leppitsch, shared his excitement about bringing Dan Houston into the fold. Leppitsch praised Houston not only for his exceptional skills but also for his leadership and experience, which will be invaluable to the team. He also expressed gratitude to John Noble and Joe Richards for their contributions to the club. While it’s always difficult to part with quality individuals, the club wishes them both success in their new endeavors.
