‘You Could Call It Some Sort Of A Yip’ – Rickie Fowler Makes Frank Putting Admission At ….
Following a six-under-par opening round at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, the frequent PGA Tour winner disclosed that he has spent the last few years dealing with a “twitch” in his right hand.
It’s no secret that Rickie Fowler has battled with form since winning the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic; in the past 12 months, the American has only finished in the top 10.
Together with Lexi Thompson, Fowler achieved that outcome at the Grant Thornton Invitational mixed event. Since his victory, Fowler’s best solo finish has occurred at the Tour Championship. A draw for position sixteen
A twitch in his putting has been a source of mystery for many, but six-time PGA Tour winner Ricky Fowler has revealed that he is dealing with it. He even went so far as to refer to it as a “yip” after shooting 66 on the opening round at Detroit Golf Club, the site of his first PGA Tour victory in four years.
“I would say over the last few years I’ve dealt with a little bit of my right hand having a little bit of twitch at times, which you could call it some sort of a ‘yip’, or there’s all kind of names for it,” Fowler said in an interview with Todd Lewis of Golf Channel on Thursday.
Lewis undoubtedly noticed the dreaded “Y” word, which is enough to make a golfer shudder, and pressed the American more on the subject. Fowler then added, “I’m fine saying it.” It’s difficult to trust someone to make decent putts when they’ve dealt with it.
“Speed was more of an issue for me, even though I was making a lot of putts that started on line. Returning to driving with my right hand and wrist locked felt like it would make it more difficult for me to use it for touch and sensation alone.
