Six players set to depart Reading FC in summer transfer overhaul while 12 have futures in doubt
An early look at how the Reading FC squad could shape up over the summer and going into 2023/24 with another big overhaul expected
With the business end of the season approaching and Reading’s status in the Championship all but secured, focus now turns to the future and what the club must do over the summer.
While the final 13 league games take priority for Paul Ince and his players, what happens at the end of the season will, no doubt, start to enter the manager’s mind.
Last season saw a big overhaul of the squad with high-profile players such as John Swift, Josh Laurent and Andy Rinomhota all departing following the end of their contracts.
Five players were signed on loan, while as many as eight players were brought in having been free agents. All being well, this summer should be the first window in a long time where the club will be able to spend money on players, with the embargo removed provided the English Football League (EFL) is satisfied with Reading’s finances.
A total of 10 senior players are out of contract at the end of June, while the majority of the loan players – of which there are now six after Cesare Casadei’s arrival from Chelsea at the end of the January window – will return to their parent clubs.
It means Ince and head of football operations Mark Bowen will be extremely busy overseeing the changes and compiling a competitive squad going into the 2023/24 season.
Clearly, things could well change in the coming months but below we deliver our verdicts on the players who are likely to be staying beyond the end of the season, departing the club for good, or who face an uncertain future at this stage.
Staying
Dean Bouzanis – The back-up goalkeeper has filled in admirably on several occasions this term, including coming on as a substitute in the FA Cup game at Manchester United. His deal runs out in 2025.
Andy Yiadom – Reading’s club captain is under contract until 2025 having signed a new deal last summer.
Tom Holmes – In the same boat as Yiadom having signed a new three-year contract last summer and was appointed vice-captain.
Tom McIntyre – Still under contract with Reading until the summer of 2024 and has been a key asset this season thanks to his versatility.
Sam Hutchinson – The defender still has another year on his contract so unless he and the club both want to part ways – which could be a possibility due to his ongoing injury issues – he will be sticking around.
Naby Sarr – The commanding centre-back had a turbulent first half to the season due to injury but has finally got a run in the side and showing fans what he is about. Under contract until 2026.
Tom Ince – Very much on course to be named Reading’s player of the season after some superb performances and under contract for a further two years.
Femi Azeez – The young forward is another to have had a tough season with injuries but he remains under contract for another couple of seasons.
Andy Carroll – The veteran forward has made the no.9 shirt (or in his case, the no.2 shirt) his own this season with a string of fine displays leading the line. And having initially signed a short-term deal, he agreed a new 18-month contract which ties him down to the club until June 2024.
Going
Scott Dann – The veteran centre-back overcame a problematic hamstring injury over the first half of the season to win his place back in the squad but at 36, age is now catching up on him and don’t be surprised to see him retire this summer which is also when his contract comes to an end.
Baba Rahman – The Chelsea loanee is in his second season on loan with Reading but his performances have largely been underwhelming. He will have one more year left on his Blues contract this summer and it is highly unlikely he will return to Berkshire.
Liam Moore – Former club captain Moore had hoped to make his return this season but injury put paid to that. After seven years in Berkshire, he will be moving on in the summer.
Cesare Casadei – The Italian youngster is highly rated by Chelsea and having signed a six-year contract last summer, he will probably be loaned out again for first-team experience next season. Whether that is back at Reading remains to be seen.
Mamadou Loum – The FC Porto loanee had a strong start to the season before suffering a mid-season dip. The midfielder has been looking better in recent weeks but he will return to Portugal in the summer.
Lucas Joao – The striker has enjoyed a rollercoaster of a time at Reading since moving in 2019. On his day, he has proven to be one of the best frontmen in the division although that is not as frequent as he or the team would like. Injuries have also taken their toll and with his contract up in June, a parting of ways will surely happen.
Future in doubt
Joe Lumley – The Middlesbrough loanee has been Reading’s no.1 this season but with his contract at the Riverside Stadium up this June and unlikely to be renewed, not even he will be sure where he will play in 2022/23. A permanent transfer to Reading, however, would surely be a possibility.
Luke Southwood – The 25-year-old is getting regular games out on loan with Cheltenham Town in League One having been shipped out by Paul Ince last summer. His contract is up in the summer and although Royals have an option to extend, it would appear unlikely at this stage.
Nesta Guinness-Walker – The club have an option to extend the left-back’s one-year contract. With Baba Rahman returning to Chelsea, retaining Guinness-Walker is a distinct possibility.
Jeff Hendrick – Newcastle loanee Hendrick has been virtually an ever-present in the side this season and although he tends to divide opinion among fans, he tends to stay injury free and is capable of scoring a screamer. It’s unlikely he will get a look-in back at St James’ Park so he will, no doubt, be looking for a permanent move this summer.
Ovie Ejaria – The midfielder has played just eight times for Reading this season with his last appearance coming back in November at Watford. He is under contract until 2024 but the club will look to move him on this summer.
Junior Hoilett – The 32-year-old has been a consistent performer for Reading over the past 18 months and boss Paul Ince is a big fan of the Canadian international. Whether he remains a Royal for a third season is unclear, with the club perhaps starting to look at younger talent to take the team forward.
Amadou Mbengue – Mbengue has arguably been one of the finds of the season after signing a short-term deal last September before prolonging his stay with the club in January. Reading will want to keep him but he will likely have plenty of offers on the table.
Dejan Tetek – The academy graduate has been blighted by injuries since making his breakthrough to first-team level. The young Serb is a talented player and at 20 he has time on his side, but with his contract up in the summer, Reading have a big decision to make on whether to persevere with him.
Tyrese Fornah – The Nottingham Forest loanee has already stated he would sign on the dotted line permanently if given the opportunity. It is hard to see him getting an opportunity at the City Ground any time soon but his future will obviously depend on what the Reds want from him.
Shane Long – The veteran returned to Reading last summer for one last swansong. He has made a positive impact on and off the field but with 34-year-old Andy Carroll already signing on for next season, the club may well want some fresh blood for the other striker positions.
