Aisling McCarthy has emerged as a crucial player for the Walyalup (Fremantle) Dockers as they head into the AFLW finals. After joining the Dockers this season from the West Coast Eagles, McCarthy has quickly proven her value, showcasing her versatility and skill as a consistent force in the midfield. With an average of over 21 disposals per game and eight goals to her name, she’s solidified her status as one of the team’s standout players in 2024.

Dockers coach Lisa Webb has praised McCarthy’s impressive development, describing her as an “all-round” player who continues to excel. Webb expressed her admiration for McCarthy’s drive to improve, calling her a remarkable individual and an integral part of the team’s strategy. This sentiment was echoed by analyst Danielle Laidley, who awarded McCarthy a perfect score for her 23-disposal, three-goal performance against Greater Western Sydney—a game that clinched the Dockers’ spot in the finals.

McCarthy’s journey to Walyalup followed a six-season career split between the West Coast Eagles and the Western Bulldogs. Despite her extensive experience, this will be her first foray into AFLW finals, and she’s expected to bring her best game to the postseason. Laidley highlighted McCarthy’s consistency throughout the season, noting her ability to deliver across various aspects of the game—from close contests to pushing forward and scoring. For the Dockers, this well-rounded approach could prove invaluable as they aim for a premiership.

In addition to McCarthy’s contribution, the Dockers’ midfield lineup has shown resilience and adaptability, especially with the absence of key player Kiara Bowers due to pregnancy. Players like Gabby Newton, Gabby O’Sullivan, and Dana East have all elevated their game, enhancing the team’s depth and strength. Despite injuries to other top players, including captain Ange Stannett and star forward Aine Tighe, the Dockers appear well-prepared to tackle the upcoming finals.

With two consecutive wins behind them, the Dockers are in a promising position to secure a top-four spot if they triumph over the Western Bulldogs in their final regular-season match. A victory would enhance their chances in the finals, although a loss could see them fall lower on the ladder. The team’s determination and unity, coupled with McCarthy’s stellar performance, are set to make Fremantle’s finals campaign one to watch.
