Football News Digest: Liverpool has made a solid start to the season.
Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool has confessed that his sending off against Newcastle last month was “expensive,” after he was fined £100,000 and given an additional one-match ban by the FA.

Van Dijk was sent off after 28 minutes into the game at St James’ Park after denying Alexander Isak a scoring chance. The centre-back kicked through the Sweden player before making touch with the ball, and after being disqualified, he argued with referee John Brooks and the fourth official.

And the centre-back afterwards admitted to acting inappropriately. “It’s been a hard and expensive lesson,” Van Dijk told reporters ahead of his country’s match against Ireland on Sunday night. “I’m afraid I can’t say anything more about it.

“I’ve accepted it, and I’m relieved that it’s over.” Hopefully, the funds will go to the proper individuals. A good purpose is always preferable.”

After being sent off in the 29th minute, the defender admitted to acting inappropriately and using abusive and disrespectful language against a match official, and the punishments were applied by an independent regulatory panel.”

“I’d just like to make it clear that I totally accept the panel’s decision,” the 2019 Champions League winner wrote on Instagram. It was my first red card of my Liverpool career, and I let my frustrations get the best of me in a heated moment. I apologized to the match officials immediately after the game and accept full responsibility.”
