Player ratings

Emi Martinez

Made a big save in the opening stages of the match to deny Estupinan what would have been the opening goal. Was denied a clean sheet after Villa gave away a sloppy goal at the start of the first half. 8

Matty Cash

Didn’t stop running down the right channel. Had a big task to keep Mitoma quiet, and he did, limiting the winger to few involvements in the penalty box. He made one mistake when he tried to guide the ball out instead of dealing with it under pressure from Mitoma. 8

Ezri Konsa

Outstanding. He kept Evan Ferguson quiet in the first half and used the ball well. Konsa led the counter attack which came just moments before Villa opened the scoring, as he charged up the field and picked out Diaby with an inch-perfect pass. 9

Pau Torres

Cool in possession and smart with positioning. Torres is beginning to settle well in this Villa side. 8

Lucas Digne

Another impressive performance from the left-back who has stepped up in Alex Moreno’s absence. 8

Boubacar Kamara

He bullied the Brighton midfield. Combative and energetic in the middle of the park, Kamara was quick to snuff out danger and won the ball back countless times throughout the 90 minutes. 9

Dougals Luiz

He’s consistently one of Villa’s top performers week in, week out. Some excellent touches to retain possession and passes to progress the ball. He become the second Villa player to score in five successive Premier League home matches, emulating Dwight Yorke in late 1996. 9

John McGinn

He’s featured in every game Villa have played so far this season and still gave his all deep into the 90th minute today. What a competitor. 8

Nicolo Zaniolo

Carried a threat which Brighton struggled to deal with in the first half. Another signing who has settled well under Emery. He was replaced early in the second half for Jacob Ramsey. 8

Moussa Diaby

Had so much space to work in as Brighton tried to play a high line. Recorded an assist and it was his strike that deflected off Estupinan for Villa’s third. 8

Ollie Watkins

Delighted for him. He puts in so much work each and every game and is finally getting his rewards in the form of goals. Watkins is a top striker and we saw that again this afternoon. He’s scored two hat-tricks in all competitions this season. 10
