Unai Emery answers Nicolo Zaniolo question as Aston Villa boss explains transfer plan
Latest Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as Unai Emery targets more additions to his squad after signing three
players so far this summer
Aston Villa remain active in the transfer market to add more players to Unai Emery’s squad this summer and are in
talks with Galatasaray over signing Nicolo Zaniolo from Galatasaray.
Monchi is leading talks with the Turkish giants to recruit Zaniolo on an initial loan move with an option to buy.
Villa’s president of football operations signed Zaniolo for Roma when he headed the Italian club’s transfer committee
in 2018, and the attacker was named Serie A Young Player of the Year in his first season there in 2018/2019.
As Villa continued talks with Galatasaray, the news that Emi Buendia suffered a significant knee ligament injury was
confirmed by the club on Thursday. The Argentine sustained the damage during training this week and has
subsequently undergone a scan.
Emery wants to add more depth to forward areas and was asked about the possibility of signing Zaniolo this month
during his pre-Newcastle press conference. He said: “We are trying to have possibilities with different players and
which players could help us. There could be one or more with the potential to come here. But now it is not 100 per
cent clear who they are.”
Emery added: “Zaniolo is not a striker. He is versatile. He can play as a striker, a number seven or a number 10 and
he is one of those on our list, with the qualities he has, to help us. He is one on the list and there are others.”
Villa have so far signed three players this summer, as Youri Tielemans, Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby have all joined
Emery’s squad over the summer. Asked if he is pleased with Villa’s business over the summer, Emery said: “Yes,
when I arrived here we did very good work in January trying to get the best decisions and not being hurried to get
someone we weren’t really convinced with. Now it’s the same, we are working trying to do a very deep analysis about everything.
“We are very happy about the process we did, still the process during the transfer window is open to get something
more and to let someone leave. We are doing deep analysis and speaking with the club, with Monchi, Nassef and Wes
and trying to improve always everything in the squad.”
