Nicole McKenna’s story is a testament to the power of community and support. Originally from Victoria, McKenna grew up as a passionate Collingwood supporter, enjoying the highs and lows that come with being a dedicated AFL fan. However, her move to Paddington in Sydney, along with her two young daughters, led her to develop a deep connection with the Sydney Swans. Over time, her passion for the game evolved into a commitment to support the club and its players in more meaningful ways.
McKenna’s journey with the Sydney Swans began with her admiration for the team, but it was the club’s AFLW program that truly resonated with her. As a longtime fan, she was drawn to the culture and sense of community the Swans fostered, especially within their women’s team. When she learned about the opportunity to contribute to the club’s locker program, McKenna saw it as a perfect way to take her support to the next level. This initiative allowed her to become personally involved with the players and their stories, fostering a deeper connection with the team.
Through this program, McKenna formed a special bond with Lexi Hamilton, a player whose family she grew close to, including Lexi’s sister, Cynthia, and their parents and grandmother. McKenna shares that a locker is more than just a space for a player’s gear—it’s an intimate reflection of who they are. Supporting this program, she says, is a unique and tangible way to contribute to the Swans’ success and help empower the women representing the club.
Now, as her daughters enter their twenties, McKenna reflects on how her involvement in the AFLW has not only been a passion for her but also a chance to set an example for her children. She hopes to inspire them by showing how important it is to support women’s rights and equality, especially
