So much for Arsenal and their backup summer signings
Arguing with Arsenal is simple. The pile-on starts whenever a club of their stature experiences such a severe decline in fortune, makes weird decisions off the field, and delivers horrible performances there.
The supporters must persevere through it. Most clubs who encounter such calamities experience it. Arsenal is in charge this time.
There is less for people to pick away at now that the team has defeated Tottenham in the North London Derby during matchweek six of the Premier League, moving up into the lofty heights of tenth place – crucially above Tottenham – as the spirit has lifted and the performance has improved.
Singled out for amusement and the being butt of every joke, plenty of that came during the summer transfer window.

Arsenal and their ‘backup’ summer signings have integrated into Mikel Arteta’s side brilliantly with all six playing key roles in the Premier League
Arsenal spent more money than any other team in the Premier League, and even all of Europe, spread among six new additions. Early looks into what the club had specifically invested so significantly in revealed a general consensus that all this money had been spent on bolstering the bench: “a bunch of backups,” it was alleged. More words said were “embarrassing” and “clueless.”
But it wasn’t only Arsenal supporters who thought three at most are regular starters under Mikel Arteta after considering the signings of Aaron Ramsdale, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Ben White, Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga, and Martin Odegaard. Arsenal was alleged to have parted with a sizable sum of money without Tomiyasu’s knowledge, particularly before his arrival.
Every single one of those newcomers was on the field for the North London Derby when the final whistle blew. All of those newcomers were on the field for the previous game against Burnley.
They’re doing okay considering they’re a bunch of backups.
Realistically, nobody anticipated things to proceed as it has: Sambi wasn’t anticipated to play this many minutes, and Ramsdale was assumed to integrate slowly. Nuno Tavares has also spent a considerable amount of time on the field.
Additionally, they have all had outstanding starts to their Arsenal careers.
This team looks very much like it belongs to Odegaard in part, Sambi has been a breath of fresh air in midfield, Ramsdale and Tomiyasu are vying for Player of the Month (this time not just because fans love shiny new things), White has settled alongside Gabriel after a rocky opening, and Nuno Tavares has performed well in all of his late Premier League cameos.
While it’s too soon to tell if certain people will be successful, it appears certain that others will enjoy successful careers in red and white. Since they are all so young and have discovered success at such an early age, they can only get better. Both Tomiyasu and Ramsdale are fighting for the Player of the Month award.
(this time not just because supporters love shiny new things), White has settled alongside Gabriel after a rocky opening, Sambi has been a breath of fresh air in midfield, this team looks very much like it’s partly belonging to Odegaard and Nuno Tavares has performed well in all his late Premier League cameos.
For some it is too soon to deem whether they’ll be a success, but for others it looks certain that they’ll have fruitful careers in red and white. All so young, to have settled as they have and found high performance levels, they can only get better.
Many may not reach their peeks for another couple of seasons. That was expected, and they’ll also have ups and downs to deal with. But for all to have come in, got the supporters on their side, improved various aspects of the team and offered strong glimpses of what is to come, then, well….that’s not bad for a bunch of ‘backups’.
