Relive the moments Newcastle United are relegated and Sunderland survive in May 2009 - Chronicle Live

When Newcastle United returns to Premier League action this weekend, they will be expecting to have some key players back from injuries.

Newcastle United started their Premier League campaign in the greatest possible way, winning 5-1 over Aston Villa. However, losses to Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton have put Eddie Howe’s team in an unusual position.

The Magpies play Brentford at St James’ Park on Saturday (5:30pm kick-off) before facing AC Milan in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday (5:45pm kick-off).

Newcastle’s current injury list is as follows…

Sven Botman – ankle

Surprise Sven Botman news arrives on Thursday morning | NUFC Blog

Sven Botman was ruled out of the trip to Brighton & Hove Albion last time out due to an ankle injury sustained against Liverpool.

Botman will be hopeful that the international break has given him enough time to heal.

Return date: 16/09 – Brentford (H)

knock, Elliot Anderson
Elliot Anderson withdrew from the Scotland senior squad after injuring himself in training and therefore lost out on his maiden cap.

The 20-year-old has returned to Newcastle and will be evaluated ahead of the encounter this Saturday.

Return date: 16/09 – Brentford (H)

Sandron Tonali – muscle fatigue

Sandro Tonali missed Italy’s 2-1 win over Ukraine on Tuesday night due to a’slight muscle injury,’ according to Sky Sport Italia, and will be assessed upon his return to Newcastle. Tonali has started all four Premier League games for Newcastle this season but is a doubt for Saturday’s game pending further assessment.

Javier Manquillo – groin

Javier Manquillo has been sidelined with a groin injury for almost a month but has lately returned to training. He did not travel to Brighton, and the arrival of Tino Livramento from Southampton has pushed the Spaniard down the pecking order.

He should be available for selection in Newcastle’s next game, however he might not make the bench for tactical rather than fitness considerations.

Return date: 16/09 – Brentford (H)

Will Elliot Anderson have an increased role with Newcastle United?

Joe Willock – Achilles

Joe Willock has not played for Newcastle since May. After suffering a hamstring injury, Howe initially ruled Willock out until after the international break.

However, the midfielder has now sustained a separate Achilles injury, which will keep him out for another six weeks. During the international break, he has been in Spain working on his recuperation. Willock will have missed five months of competitive football by the time he is set to return.

Crystal Palace (H) – 21/10 expected return

Emil Krafth – ACL

Emil Krafth has missed over a year of football following a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury picked up at Tranmere Rovers last August.

The Swedish defender was spotted in training last week. Given the period of time Krafth has spent on the sidelines, it could still be a while before we see him back in the first-team picture.

Expected return: 21/10 – Crystal Palace (H)
