Matt Pobereyko, a 31-year-old former pitching prospect for the Mets, was discovered dead.
Former Mets pitching prospect Matt Pobereyko passed away over the weekend at the age of 31 after a heart attack, according to MLB source Hector Gomez.
Pobereyko was a member of the Marlins and Diamondbacks organizations in addition to the Mets. At the time of his terrible demise, he was pitching in Mexico.
“We mourn the loss of Matt Pobereyko,” the Sioux City Explorers, an independent league team, tweeted. “A great baseball player and an even better person. RIP Pobo.”
Another independent league team, the St. Paul Saints, also sent out their condolences via Twitter.
“It is with a heavy heart that we learned of the passing of former Saints pitcher (’20) Matt Pobereyko. He was an incredible teammate and fierce competitor, but an even nicer person. He will be missed by all that knew him. We send our love to his family and friends.”
Pobereyko attended Kentucky Wesleyan College, where he went 9-2 with a 1.96 ERA in 12 games in his final season with the team.
“The entire Kentucky Wesleyan community mourns the loss of former baseball player Matt Pobereyko. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time,” the school tweeted.
