‘Explosive’ forward Newcastle want has now rejected PL deadline day move – Romano
Newcastle United had recently taken a look at PSV winger Johan Bakayoko but it was Brentford who made the move for the 20-year-old Belgian.
Alan Nixon recently said that Newcastle scouts were casting their eye over Johan Bakayoko during PSV’s comprehensive two-legged win over Rangers in the Champions League qualifiers.
No news broke of an actual bid from Newcastle but Fabrizo Romano had tweeted (X’d?) that Brentford had bid £34million bid last night and indicated that a deal looked likely, especially after news emerged that Bakayoko was ‘pushing‘ for a move.
Bakayoko has rejected the move to Brentford at the last minute
Not even 24 hours later, the ‘explosive‘ forward has now rejected the move to West London, instead opting to stay at PSV in order to play in the Champions League according to Romano.
PSV overcame the challenge from Rangers to qualify for the Champions League where they were drawn in a group with Arsenal, Sevilla and RC Lens.
If it was Champions League football that was the deal-breaker then had Newcastle bid the move would have had a bigger chance to go through.
Newcastle should be able to out-muscle Brentford in January
Romano says that Brentford may try again in January, but obviously they still won’t have that Champions League carrot to dangle in front of Bakayoko, but Newcastle will.
Should Newcastle lodge their own £34million bid in January they’d surely stand more of a chance than Brentford.
Of course, Newcastle’s scouts may have changed their minds on Bakayoko after watching him against Rangers. That could explain why there was no bid.
