Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate has openly shared his disappointment over not being selected for Japan’s national team during the latest international fixtures. Despite being called up by coach Hajime Moriyasu for matches against China and Bahrain earlier this month, Hatate found himself sidelined, unable to contribute as his teammates secured impressive victories of 7-0 and 5-0.
The 26-year-old reflected on his exclusion, acknowledging that it stemmed from his performance levels. He articulated his frustration at not being able to play, saying, “I was disappointed, but the other players were also disappointed in their own way.” Hatate emphasized that many of his teammates experienced varying degrees of disappointment, whether due to limited playing time or not being selected at all. However, he noted that despite these feelings, he still found value in the experience with the national team.
Hatate viewed his participation in the national team activities as beneficial, stating, “I believe that there were many things I would not have experienced or learned if I hadn’t been there.” Having taken part in the AFC Asian Cup 2024, he feels more motivated than ever to continue contributing to the national side. He aims to enhance his performance at Celtic, focusing on achieving his goals and assists, ultimately striving for another opportunity to represent Japan.
Following criticism for his performance against Hearts, Hatate rebounded impressively in a recent UEFA Champions League match against Slovan Bratislava. He showcased his skills by making several impactful plays and notably assisted fellow countryman Daizen Maeda with a beautifully placed through ball following an exquisite display of footwork.
While injuries have hindered his ability to fully excel under manager Brendan Rodgers, Hatate is optimistic about his trajectory. After a strong finish to the previous season and a steady start this year, he is determined to elevate his game and solidify his place both at Celtic and within the national team setup.
