Andre Drege, a professional cyclist from Norway, passed away following an accident during the Tour of Austria.
During a steep descent, the 25-year-old racer for Team Coop-Repsol lost control of his bike and tumbled. His management released a statement on Saturday, X, confirming his death and saying, “AndreŁ Drege’s tragic passing leaves us devastated.””
“The International Cycling Union (UCI) is devastated to learn of the death of professional cyclist Andre Drege at the Tour of Austria,” the UCI continued on X. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates.”
“It was an accident, and he died due to the injuries he sustained,” the local police informed Norwegian TV 2. We’re looking into what caused it.”
There would be no post-race presentations.
Cycling has seen many deaths in the last 12 months.
Juan Pujalte, an 18-year-old Spaniard, passed away in March following his involvement in a tragic training accident.
The 22-year-old Belgian racer Tijl De Decker died in August as a result of serious injuries he received in a training accident.
Magnus White, a 17-year-old member of the U.S. Junior Men’s National Team, passed away after being struck by a car as he was exercising in Boulder, Colorado, a few days after Jacopo Venzo, an Italian 17-year-old, died in an accident during an Austrian event.
Stage five of the Tour de Suisse saw Swiss racer Gino Mader, then 26 years old, crash into a ravine while descending towards the finish line. Mader passed away in mid-June 2023.
