As Port Adelaide prepares for their debut in the AFLW finals series, defender Ange Foley shared her thoughts with the media on the team’s progression and
their mindset heading into the crucial match against Richmond. With a wealth of experience, including two AFLW premierships from her time at the Crows,
Foley is confident her side has the talent and drive to make a strong finals appearance. Port Adelaide faces Richmond in Sunday’s Second
Elimination Final, a team they recently lost to, but with a surge of momentum from six consecutive wins, Foley believes the Power will be up to the challenge.
Foley reflected on the team’s growth, particularly following their dramatic one-point victory over Greater Western
Sydney, a result she called one of the best wins she’s been a part of. “This club has been building towards success, and to be in a final, we’re really excited,” she said.
For a side that’s only in its third season, Foley acknowledged the significant work that’s gone into reaching this stage, not just on the field but also through
immense support behind the scenes. The team’s improvement over time and their ability to refine their game week by week has them feeling confident about competing with the league’s best.
Despite the thrill of securing a spot in the finals, Foley emphasized the need for focus as Port Adelaide prepares to face a tough opponent in Richmond. “You have
to enjoy those kinds of wins, but we know the job isn’t done. Our focus is now entirely on Richmond,” she said. The team is not just happy to be part of the
finals, but they are aiming for the top prize. “We’re not here to just make up the numbers.
We’re going for the championship, one game at a time,” she added, displaying a no-nonsense attitude toward the upcoming challenges.
Reflecting on the team’s evolution over the past three years, Foley highlighted the importance of constant improvement.
The Power have shown substantial growth, particularly after a slow start to the season. “Our best is going to compete with the best,” she asserted, noting the
momentum of their six-game winning streak. Foley also stressed the importance of consistency in performance, explaining how the team
has worked hard to develop a full four-quarter effort, even overcoming some early-season struggles.
Ange Foley also spoke about her leadership role within the team, emphasizing the importance of guiding the younger players. “A big part of my role here is leadership. It’s about empowering these girls, helping them grow, and watching them become the future leaders of this club,” she said. With several key players potentially returning to the side, including Matilda Scholz, Abbey Dowrick, and Julia Teakle, Foley is optimistic about the added depth and energy they will bring to the team. “It’s exciting to have them back, and we’re all looking forward to the challenge ahead,” she concluded, confident that Port Adelaide is ready to make their mark in the finals.
