In a gripping clash at Alberton Oval, Port Adelaide secured an important eight-point victory over Collingwood, marking their third consecutive win in the 2024 NAB AFLW season. The final score stood at 4.9 (33) to 3.7 (25), a result that not only boosts Port’s chances of making the finals but also leaves the Magpies struggling with a disappointing 1-7 record.

The match turned in Port’s favor during a commanding third quarter, where their midfield dominance was palpable. Matilda Scholz was particularly impressive, contributing 15 disposals, 20 hitouts, and nine clearances, along with a goal. Abbey Dowrick also made her mark with 20 disposals and nine clearances, showcasing Port’s control in the center of the ground, as they outperformed Collingwood in clearances with a staggering 42-13.

The opening quarter saw Port’s Gemma Houghton play a key role, assisting Caitlin Wendland in scoring the first goal of the game. Collingwood responded in the second quarter with Georgia Clark, who marked her first AFLW goal with a remarkable catch inside 50, followed closely by Mikala Cann, who added another goal to the Pies’ tally with her 21 disposals and 10 tackles.

Port Adelaide’s third quarter was highlighted by a spectacular goal from Houghton, a potential contender for the NAB AFLW Goal of the Year, as she maneuvered through the ruck and finished from an acute angle. Justine Mules-Robinson also found the net, and Scholz demonstrated her aerial skills with a superb mark, further extending Port’s lead. Although Alana Porter managed a late goal for Collingwood, the comeback fell short as they couldn’t bridge the gap.

In terms of player highlights, Port’s Kirsty Lamb made a notable return after missing two games due to a concussion, contributing nine disposals and five tackles. On the other side, Bri Davey and Brit Bonnici were contained to 14 and nine disposals, respectively, in a match that was critical for both teams’ standings.

Looking ahead, Port Adelaide will host St Kilda next Friday, while Collingwood will face Adelaide at home. The stage is set for more exciting matchups as the season progresses, with both teams eager to improve their standings.
