Port Adelaide bounced back in a significant way during week five of the AFLW season, achieving a decisive 35-point victory over Carlton at Alberton Oval. After a disappointing performance against Richmond just five days prior, the Power demonstrated resilience and growth, concluding the match with a score of 8.10 (58) to 3.5 (23).
Carlton initially made its mark on the game, with Darcy Vescio scoring the first goal. However, Port quickly regrouped after trailing by two points at the first break. A crucial mark by Gemma Houghton enabled the Power to take the lead, with her resulting goal marking the beginning of Port’s dominance.
The third quarter saw a brief resurgence from Carlton, courtesy of Breann Moody, who scored midway through the term. Nonetheless, Port swiftly countered with Sachi Syme netting her first goal of the season. Despite Jess Dal Pos bringing Carlton within ten points early in the final quarter, the Power responded with four consecutive goals, effectively sealing their victory.
Port’s defense capitalized on Carlton’s disorganization, particularly between forwards Mia Austin and Celine Moody, who struggled to coordinate their movements. Port defenders Amelie Borg and Ange Foley played a pivotal role in maintaining stability for the team, allowing them to mount a strong comeback.
Throughout the match, Houghton proved to be a constant threat, finishing with two goals. Midfielder Abbey Dowrick stood out with her aggressive play, recording 21 disposals, seven tackles, and six clearances. Rookie Piper Window also made her mark by scoring her first AFLW goal during a late-game scoring spree. Carlton faced challenges in the midfield without star player Abbie McKay, while midfielder Meg Robertson returned from a knee injury to contribute 20 disposals.
Looking ahead, Port Adelaide is set to travel to Perth to take on West Coast, aiming for a spot in the top eight, following the Eagles’ recent victory over GWS.
