Police Break Up Boxing Day Party Chaos in Fremantle
In the early hours of Boxing Day, Fremantle witnessed the disruption of two large gatherings, prompting WA Police to step in twice to restore order. Both incidents unfolded between midnight and the early morning, involving significant numbers of attendees and ending with charges laid against an event organizer.
The first disturbance occurred just after midnight at Booyeembara Park, where approximately 600 people had gathered. Multiple police units, including the Canine Unit and the Regional Operations Group, were dispatched to the scene. Authorities deemed the assembly out of control, but thankfully, the crowd was dispersed without major complications.
Later, at around 3 a.m., police were called to another gathering at Port Beach in North Fremantle, involving about 200 individuals. It is believed that many attendees were remnants of the earlier park event. This second gathering also escalated into an “out of control” situation. Law enforcement intervened, and most participants complied when asked to vacate the area.
However, one individual, a 28-year-old DJ, allegedly resisted the directives. Despite repeated warnings from police to shut down his equipment, the DJ reportedly increased the music volume and refused to leave. Officers confiscated his equipment and issued further orders to vacate, which he ignored. As a result, he is facing charges for failing to comply with an order related to an out-of-control gathering. He is scheduled to appear in Fremantle Magistrates Court on January 24.
These incidents highlight the challenges law enforcement faces in managing large, unsanctioned gatherings, particularly during festive periods. While the majority of attendees adhered to police instructions, isolated resistance such as this underscores the importance of clear communication and cooperation between authorities and the public.
