Nuggets Struggle Without Nikola Jokic as Injury Sidelines MVP

The Denver Nuggets have hit a rough patch in their 2024-25 season, struggling to find consistency in the absence of their star center, Nikola Jokic. After a tough loss to the Chicago Bulls on Monday, the Nuggets have now dropped three of their last four games, all without their three-time MVP. Jokic has been sidelined for five consecutive games due to a left ankle impingement, leaving Denver to navigate a difficult stretch without their best player.

Head coach Michael Malone addressed the challenge before Monday’s matchup, emphasizing the need for others to step up. “Well, they have to,” Malone said, acknowledging the team’s need to perform without their usual leader. He pointed out that Denver had managed impressive wins against strong opponents like Golden State and Houston, both without Jokic and Jamal Murray. However, relying on the team’s depth instead of their usual go-to strategy—giving the ball to Jokic—has forced others to elevate their game.

While Murray delivered an outstanding performance in Monday’s loss, scoring 28 points and dishing out seven assists, the team as a whole struggled. Forward Peyton Watson also stepped up with 24 points on an efficient 8-of-12 shooting night, but Denver’s overall execution was lacking. Malone noted that while the team took care of the basketball, their inability to secure defensive rebounds nearly cost them. With Jokic unavailable, the Nuggets have relied on a collective effort, but it’s clear how much his presence impacts their success.

Jokic is expected to return during the team’s five-game homestand, which began with the loss to Chicago. The Nuggets have a stark contrast in performance with and without their star big man—posting a 41-21 record when he plays but falling to 4-7 without him. This stretch of missed games is particularly rare for Jokic, as he hasn’t sat out five straight contests since 2017. While Malone remains optimistic about his squad’s ability to adapt, it’s clear they are not accustomed to playing without their MVP.

With just nine games remaining in the regular season, the Nuggets are running out of time to regain their rhythm before the playoffs. While securing wins in Jokic’s absence is important, the top priority remains getting him back to full strength. Denver’s championship hopes hinge on having their leader back on the court, and the sooner that happens, the better.
