Nottingham Forest transfer news: Reds now want 29-year-old Arsenal player

Nottingham Forest are in talks over a deal to sign Matt Turner from Arsenal as they look to sign a new goalkeeper. The American stopper is behind Aaron Ramsdale and the Gunners might be open to a sale

According to David Ornstein from The Athletic, the talks are ongoing between Forest and Arsenal, with Turner on the club’s shortlist. The 29-year-old has been with the Gunners since July 2022 but has been considered second choice.

Forest are in desperate need of a goalkeeper before the season starts. Ethan Horvath is the only senior custodian in the ranks, with George Shelvey providing the backup during pre-season.

Turner has made seven appearances for Arsenal but regular first-team football is likely to be something he would consider. Although Forest still hope to sign Dean Henderson, it’s not certain that he will be fit to start the season

As a result, Forest are targeting two goalkeepers this summer. Jose Sa is another stopper who has been linked, but it’s very unlikely that Wolves will sell the goalkeeper without first signing a replacement.

Mikel Arteta has raved about Turner during his time at Arsenal. He’s called him ‘phenomenal’ before, with the stopper playing particularly well during a game against Bodo/Glimt last season..

Forest in talks to sign Turner and it’s a deal that could work

The Reds would be wise to step up their efforts to sign another goalkeeper. They simply can’t rely on their current options, with Horvath and Shelvey both untried in the Premier League.

Turner does have some experience with Arsenal to his name. He’s also collected 32 caps for the United States and is currently considered as captain of his country.

The Reds do obviously want Henderson to sign before the transfer window closes. His fitness is a concern though and ultimately, Forest want to make sure they’re well-stocked.

Rumour rating: 8/10 – There is a lot to like about this deal. Turner is a proven international performer and he’d be a safe pair of hands between the posts.

Forest would be getting Turner when he’s in his prime and at 29, they could enjoy a quality few seasons out of the American.
