Tottenham stalwart ‘under threat’ as Postecoglou ‘might’ sell defender with rivals lurking

Journalist Paul Brown believes Eric Dier is “under threat” as Ange Postecoglou prefers to play only two centre-backs in his system, and the boss “might” sell him for a “decent offer”.

The defence is the main area that Postecoglou has looked to improve so far at Tottenham. The signing of Micky van de Ven follows a season in which Spurs shipped 63 Premier League goals – the fifth-most in the league.

Van de Ven looks a good addition to the side, while more centre-backs moves have also been mooted. It’s suggested that one central defender, Dier, could soon leave the club too.

Brown believes he may play less often this season as he was utilised in a back three last term – playing 33 league games – and Postecoglou has opted for a flat back four with two centre-backs.

“I think Dier’s position is the one that’s under threat at Spurs, I just think he’s much more suited at the moment to playing in a three at the back than a four at the back,” Brown told GIVEMESPORT.

While he feels Dier could remain up to scratch and keep getting minutes, Brown also feels there is a chance the centre-back is allowed to leave.

“It seems like the manager is going in a different direction, but I would never count him out. There have been times when he’s fallen out of the side before and people had written him off,” he added.

“But he came back quite strong and forced his way back into the team on those occasions. So I don’t think he’s one they are actively trying to sell. But I think if a club came in with a decent offer, Spurs might take it.”

It has previously been suggested that Tottenham would consider selling Dier. While that would leave them one defender down, they’ve obviously signed Van de Ven, who should up the quality, and means there would be the same amount of options as previously if somebody was to leave.

Dier is reportedly the subject of interest from Tottenham’s London rivals Crystal Palace. They are said to be one of a host of clubs that have been ‘alerted to the opportunity of signing’ the Spurs man.

If they’re able to come in with a good offer, Tottenham might well consider it. As such, it’ll be interesting to see if the Eagles do attempt to sign him.
