Wout Faes, a Leicester City defender, has confirmed there were ‘discussions’ regarding a possible transfer amid links to Tottenham Hotspur.
Wout Faes has admitted to receiving interest but is content to stay at Leicester City.
Faes is currently on international duty with Belgium, where he appeared in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Azerbaijan.
The former Anderlecht player hopes to establish himself as a starting center back for Belgium ahead of Euro 2024.
With his Euro 2024 hopes on the line, Faes could have pushed for a summer escape following Leicester’s relegation.
Faes, on the other hand, told Humo – as cited and translated by Sport Witness – that joining a Premier League club merely to sit on the bench would have been pointless.
Faes revealed there were ‘discussions’ about a possible move away during the summer, but he is content to put himself through his paces in the Championship.
“There have been discussions,” Faes explained. “However, there was no point in selecting a club where I would sit on the bench.” That would have harmed my chances of making the national squad.
“We’re playing for the championship.” Is it preferable to spend an entire season chasing an elusive ball in the Premier League? The Championship level is also not insignificant. “It’s known as the most difficult competition in the world,” he remarked.
Tottenham Hotspur were interested in Wout Faes.
Faes’ statements may lead some to believe he is referring to Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs were linked with Faes late in August, when reporter Ben Jacobs informed Last Word on Spurs that Tottenham had internally pondered making a deal for him.
Just before the deadline, Belgian reporter Sacha Tavolieri revealed that Tottenham were eyeing Faes to replace Eric Dier if he left.
However, because Dier stayed, Tottenham did not make a late bid for Faes.
The Leicester guy, on the other hand, appears to have been aware of the interest, and his comments suggest that even if they struck a deal, a move to Spurs would not have been guaranteed.
Faes to Spurs might resurface in January.
Spurs could be on the lookout for another defender in January.
Dier is plainly unwanted at Tottenham and will very certainly contemplate leaving in January if he is again frozen out under Ange Postecoglou.
Spurs have just released Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga, so a center back will undoubtedly be required in January.
Tottenham are ready to buy Hajduk Split midfielder Luka Vuskovic, but he will not arrive until 2025.
Adding someone with more experience than Alfie Dorrington and Ashley Phillips would be beneficial, and 25-year-old Faes, who joined Leicester for about £15 million, may still be a target for Tottenham by 2024.
