Newcastle manager talks about season ticket sales, transfer business, and ‘attacking’ cups.

Newcastle chief Darren Eales discusses season ticket demand, transfer business, and ‘attacking’ cups

Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales held another round table with journalists after meeting media at training ground this week

Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales says that the Magpies are analysing the remainder of the transfer window carefully after landing three senior signings in Tino Livramento, Harvey Barnes and Sandro Tonali.

All three have a chance of featuring in the weekend’s opener against Aston Villa at St James’ Park and will help bolster the club’s dreams of fighting on both the Champions League and domestic front. But with three weeks of the summer trading period remaining, Eales refuses to rule out more additions.

When asked at a round table with journalists, Eales told Chronicle Live: “We have three players who we are really happy with. As you can imagine there has been a lot of work this summer with Dan Ashworth and Eddie Howe working on how we want to improve the squad.

“You’ve seen that with the players we’ve brought in. It’s quality players to give that competitive nature in the squad and that ability to compete with Champions League on a Wednesday and then playing in the Premier League on a Saturday.

“I think we’ve done that. It is difficult to predict what the starting line-up will be on Saturday because we have brought that quality in. We will never say we are done in a window, in any window. Because you never know what opportunities will be brought forward

“We are always looking to improve the squad, to improve the club itself. It is impossible to say a number (of players) or whether things are done.

“But I think, you will see, we will always be looking. If there’s the right deal at the right price, the right opportunity to take advantage of, we will look to do that.”

Eales showed he was game for a laugh at the weekend when posting an Instagram picture of him posing with both the Sela Cup and Diriyah Cup after Newcastle lifted both off season trophies. When asked about delivering the club’s first major trophy since 1969 to what is now a dusty cabinet, Eales was clear on Newcastle’s overall vision.

Eales said: “Firstly, I think you’ve seen it with Eddie – we want to attack every competition. We will have four chances with Premier League, Champions League, League Cup and FA Cup. We saw it last year, the thought of winning that first trophy last year, the city would shut down for a week. It’s incredible. For us, we are always going to look to compete in all the tournaments that we’re in.”

Newcastle’s clash with Aston Villa will be a sell out this weekend with lucky fans netting tickets via a ballot this week. Getting hands on a season ticket is trickier for fans of all ages.

It’s something Newcastle can do little about in the short-term. As reported on Chronicle Live last week, United are undergoing a feasibility report to see what is possible in terms of stadium expansion and only then could new opportunities for season ticket holders emerge.

The Toon CEO said: “We have our season ticket holders renewed at an incredible rate. We then have our membership which is the next tier down. We don’t actually have a waiting list at the moment.”

When asked if any season tickets were ever going to be available this summer, Eales: “No, because everybody renews because of the Champions League. It’s great to get that.”

For now, it remains a ‘champagne problem’ for United but the club are wary of giving fans as much engagement as possible moving forward.

Eales said: “It’s one of the positives we have, we don’t have an issue with tickets (sell of them), because of the demands. One of the challenges of that is how do you make sure it is something that’s not locked in?

“How do you make it, so only those who have season tickets are the only ones who get to come to games? I think this is something that goes to the bigger picture.

“We will always want to give the opportunity to supporters to come and watch a game. It is difficult to do when there is such demand for tickets. That’s where we have to be thoughtful with that process.”
