In response to the surging popularity of pickleball across the nation, Central Illinois now has a dedicated venue for enthusiasts to enjoy the sport year-round. The Picklr, a franchise originating from Utah, has set up its first location in the former Gold’s Gym Express on the east side of Normal. This facility aims to create an inclusive environment specifically for pickleball lovers, with plans to expand further into areas like Peoria, Champaign, and the Quad Cities, according to managing member Adam Bell.

Chris Kawakita, president of the Bloomington-Normal Pickleball Club, highlighted the significance of The Picklr’s opening. He noted that this new club represents not just a place to play, but also reflects the tremendous growth of pickleball both locally and globally. The rising interest in the sport, particularly in the Bloomington-Normal region, is evident as more players of all ages embrace it.

Unlike other indoor venues that have popped up in the Twin Cities, The Picklr stands out as the first social club entirely dedicated to pickleball. Spanning an impressive 30,000 square feet, the facility boasts nine pickleball courts, including two championship-grade courts, alongside a pro shop and comfortable lounge areas. This space will provide a welcomed escape during winter months, allowing players to continue enjoying the sport in a controlled environment. “Our courts adhere to professional regulations, ensuring quality play year-round,” said Bell.

Kawakita, who began playing in 2020, has witnessed a noticeable uptick in younger players engaging with the sport. Both he and Bell believe that clubs like The Picklr are instrumental in attracting a new generation of players, emphasizing the community aspect of pickleball.
