Maria Tviberg, the renowned Norwegian alpine skier, is stepping away from competitive skiing. In her retirement announcement, Tviberg expressed deep gratitude for her journey in the sport. Reflecting on her career, she shared, “I’m thankful for all that I’ve experienced as an athlete and for what I’ve achieved. I will surely miss my teammates and the thrill of competing every weekend throughout the winter season. I’m proud to have made the decision to retire now and even prouder of not quitting sooner, especially given the many memorable experiences I’ve had in the final years of my career.”
Tviberg’s career has been marked by both notable achievements and significant challenges. Among her many accomplishments, she won the World Championship in parallel giant slalom in 2023 and was part of the silver-medal-winning team in the team parallel event at the same championships held in Meribel, France. Additionally, she earned a bronze medal in the team parallel event at the 2018 Beijing Olympics and achieved a career-best fifth place in the World Cup in Soelden in 2021. Despite facing numerous injuries throughout her career, Tviberg’s resilience and determination have been remarkable.
Claus Johan Ryste, Head of Alpine Skiing at the Norwegian Ski Association, praised Tviberg’s impressive career: “Maria has consistently performed at the highest level across all disciplines for nearly a decade. Her ability to overcome serious injuries and return to form has been truly inspiring. We will certainly miss her energy and tenacity on the slopes and wish her nothing but the best for her future endeavors.”
As Tviberg transitions to this new phase of her life, she expressed a mix of anticipation and apprehension. She extended her thanks to her family, the Norwegian Ski Association, Olympiatoppen, her sponsors, and the health team who have supported her throughout her career, especially in managing the aftermath of her injuries.
