Leeds United Supporters Trust Seek Answers from Angus Kinnear

It’s fair to say the last few weeks have been difficult for Leeds United fans. Players seemingly fee to leave on loan for little or no fee and a distinct lack of transfers coming the other way. There has also been an air of silence from the club with Daniel Farke alone in facing the media. With that in mind the Leeds United Supporters Trust took the concerns of the fans to club CEO Angus Kinnear.

At the heart of the discussion was the issue of players contracts and release clauses. Fans have been puzzled by the inclusion of loan clauses which seem to give the player all of the power, leaving the club with little control of departures this season. Kinnear disclosed that these clauses were a product of financial caution under previous ownership. To ensure the club’s stability in case of relegation, wage cut clauses were tied to exit clauses, balancing player retention against potential financial turmoil. Though seemingly paradoxical, these moves were essential for preserving the club’s financial health.

Kinnear advised that the particular use of loans has saved Leeds United over £30 million in salaries, which can be reinvested in eager players who embody the spirit of the club. This gamble aims to enhance players’ market value during their loan tenure, potentially leading to profitable future sales. Kinnear assured fans that this strategy would transform under new ownership but emphasized the importance of melding talent with commitment.

In light of these clauses, the Trust questioned whether the club willingly released Jack Harrison. Kinnear confessed that the club shared fans’ disappointment in Harrison’s departure. Despite the club’s exhaustive efforts to retain him, the allure of the Premier League ultimately lured him away, reflecting the challenging terrain of top-tier football. It now seems that Tyler Adams will also depart the club, this time on a permanent deal, with Bournemouth having triggered his release caluse.

As concerns about an imbalanced transfer window mounted, Kinnear promised brighter days ahead. Amidst a flurry of departures and injuries, he maintained his confidence in bolstering the squad with incoming talents. Though exact targets remained undisclosed, his commitment to a healthier, stronger squad by transfer window closure was unwavering. That said, we have had similar promises from Kinnear before and look where we are now. How’s that striker and left back coming along Angus?

Answering questions relating to the clubs spending power this season, Kinnear answered with unwavering confidence, he affirmed the club’s robust position, fueled by the backing of 49ers Enterprises. This financial foundation affords Leeds United the means to boldly compete. If so, it’s time for the new owners to put their money where their mouth and attack the transfer market with aggression as promised. Daniel Farke’s squad is looking pretty thread bear right now, serious additions are needed, and quickly, if Leeds are to compete in any way this season.

Transparency took center stage as the Trust pressed for better communication from the club. The fans’ plea for reassurance about the club’s ambitions resonated with Kinnear. While acknowledging the difficulty of detailing ongoing negotiations, Kinnear pledged to engage with the Trust through an in-person Q&A session. This open forum seeks to bridge the gap between the club and its fervent supporters. As the meeting drew to a close, Kinnear lauded Daniel Farke’s leadership prowess. He held the firm belief that under Farke’s guidance, players would rally and steer the team toward a triumphant future. He rallied the fanbase to continue showering support, showcasing their unwavering loyalty.

The Leeds United Supporters Trust’s meeting with Kinnear illuminated the inner workings of a club navigating through a difficult period. Whilst Kinnear’s comments are promising the club need to back them up in the coming weeks. If the departure do not slow and players are not seen to come into the club in the opposite direction, the fanbases restlessness will only increase.
