Packers star from N.J. cries (again) after coach’s Thanksgiving gesture
Rashan Gary, a linebacker with the Green Bay Packers, was out for over a year while he healed from an ACL tear he sustained against the Detroit Lions.
In Thursday’s 29-22 victory over the NFC North-leading Lions, Gary equaled a career best with three sacks and seven tackles, caused a career-high two fumbles (recovering one of them), and played on the field where the former Michigan standout tore a knee ligament the previous season.
Safety Jonathan Owens returned Gary’s first forced fumble for a touchdown in the first quarter.
Gary was in tears as head coach Matt LaFleur gave him a game ball in the locker room. LeFleur ticked off the reasons why Gary — who was born in Plainfield, N.J., and starred at Paramus Catholic before playing for the Wolverines — deserved the Thanksgiving game ball, including his comeback from injury.
“I’m tired of crying around y’all,” Gary said as he hugged LeFleur.
The Packers (5-6) were in control of a game they never trailed: Quarterback Jordan Love set the tone with a 53-yard pass to Christian Watson on the game’s first play and finished with a career-high-tying three touchdowns.
“That obviously was a very critical play in the game,” LaFleur said. “And, that translated into a touchdown.”
Three plays after the failed fake, Love threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Christian Watson to give Green Bay a 29-14 lead. Lions head coach Dan Campbell later lamented that decision.
