Virgil van Dijk responds to the Football Association’s sanction for improper conduct.
Van Dijk earned an additional one-game suspension and a £100,000 fine for inappropriate behavior.
The Liverpool defender is expected to miss the match against Wolves.
Captain’s thoughts on the fine and longer suspension
Virgil van Dijk has described his FA allegation for improper conduct as a “hard and expensive lesson” after receiving a £100,000 punishment.
The FA accused the defender on Friday for what they deemed improper conduct by the player, after Van Dijk described referee John Brooks’ decision to send him off a “f***ing joke.” Van Dijk had already been suspended for the match against Aston Villa due to the red card, but he has now received a further one-match ban and a hefty £100,000 fine for the incident.
Van Dijk discussed the fine with the press before of the Netherlands’ important Euro 2024 qualifying match against Republic of Ireland at the Aviva Stadium.
“It’s been a difficult and costly lesson.” I’m afraid I can’t say anything more about it. “I’ve accepted it, and I’m relieved that it’s over,” he remarked.
“I was punished for it, but I don’t believe I was used as an example.” Hopefully, the funds will go to the proper individuals. A good purpose is always preferable.”
Van Dijk also issued a statement on social media after learning of the FA’s suspension and punishment, adding that he “totally accepted” the decision: “Following today’s announcement, I’d just like to state unequivocally that I fully support the panel’s decision.” It was my first red card in my Liverpool career, and I let my rage get the better of me.
“I apologized to the match officials immediately after the game and accept full responsibility.” It’s time to move on. I will continue to assist the club in any manner I can.”
The defender’s first game back for Liverpool will be against LASK in the Europa League group stage on September 21, followed by a visit to the London Stadium by West Ham United a few days later.
