Farke explains ‘difficult’ decision to substitute Cody Drameh in Leeds United’s win at Ipswich
The Whites defender replaced the injured Sam Byram midway through the first-half but was taken off at half-time
Daniel Farke says it was a difficult decision to take off Cody Drameh against Ipswich Town but refuses to lay any
blame at the young defenders door. The Whites academy graduate struggled after replacing the injured Sam
Byram midway through the first-half, with Farke replacing the substitute at half-time.
Drameh has been tipped to establish himself as the main right-back at Elland Road this summer after shining on
loan with Luton Town last year. However, an early injury has kept him out of the early part of the campaign and he
was thrust back into the deep end at Portman Road.
“Well, first of all, it feels a bit like right now we’re in the season and if you think ‘thank God no sucker punch’, comes
another sucker punch,” the Whites boss said. “Sam has been brilliant so far and this moment there was an injury.
“He was even last games one of our best performers. It was a bit tricky because we were pretty much aware that
always Wes Burns has unbelievable pace and we need a quick player to defend him.
“For that was then my thought Cody because he’s physically a really good player, good pace and you know that he’s
capable. Also he plays in the full-back position on the right side but also I got the feeling he can handle the quality
and the pace of Burns.
“It was difficult for him to come into such a game to such a hectic game and I won’t blame him at all. Obviously he
was involved in the second goal and two or three times Burns was in his back and but it was my decision also to let
him play that, so if someone wants to blame someone then definitely not Cody because he’s brilliant. Always was a
great attitude.
“Always with good training intensity, sadly he missed two or three weeks in pre-season and it wasn’t the easiest way
for him to come late into the first competitive game during the season. So if someone is to blame them it’s my
decision to blame on the left side and yes, for that it didn’t look that great.
“It’s more like in the second half I decided to play Jamie Shackleton, pretty reliable player and also a player who can
handle the pace of play like Burns but even for him it was not easy, getting a yellow card. We had to be aware because
Ipswich uses pace over the right wing pretty much and thank God in the end we were able to grind out three points.”
