Ryan Manning, a defender, will not be traveling with Southampton to Preston on Wednesday night due to a suspension.
The left-back received a fifth yellow card of the season in Saturday’s win at Hull and will now serve a one-match ban.
“We’ll have to assess things today,” he said. “A couple of people were carrying things going into that game [at Hull] so we’ll have to look and keep an eye on them and assess whether three games in a week is going to be one, possible, and two, a risk to them individually which would mean it was a risk to us as a team.
“We’re in a place where we really trust all of the players, so there may be an opportunity for one or two players this week who’ve been frustrated at some point, not playing a huge amount of minutes, or just recently haven’t played a lot.
Since we’ve had a pretty reliable starting lineup for a while now, which has greatly aided us, players need to seize their opportunities. Ideally, we would maintain that lineup. However, we have a team, and the players that entered the game late on Saturday had a significant impact. It was even more clear after reviewing the replay. Players will have opportunities, and they must seize them.
