Fremantle Football Club has made a significant move by securing Richmond star Shai Bolton in a high-profile trade. The 25-year-old midfielder will return to his home state of Western Australia, with the Dockers giving up picks 10, 11, and 18 to Richmond in exchange for Bolton, pick 14, and a future third-round pick. The deal was finalized earlier this week, with both clubs and the AFL giving their approval.

This trade is a major boost for Fremantle, who are aiming to bounce back after a disappointing 2024 season where they missed the finals. Adding a dynamic player like Bolton, who brings creativity, speed, and the ability to break lines, could be the spark the Dockers need to reinvigorate their squad. Bolton, a two-time premiership player and 2022 All-Australian, will now be tied to Fremantle until the end of 2029.

For Richmond, the trade brings an unprecedented draft haul. In addition to picks 10, 11, and 18, the Tigers now hold a total of six picks inside the top 24 of the upcoming draft. This windfall positions them to build a strong foundation for the future, especially with the possibility of further trades, including a rumored deal with Gold Coast for Daniel Rioli.

David Walls, Fremantle’s list manager, was thrilled with the acquisition, calling Bolton “exactly what we need.” He praised Bolton’s durability, consistency, and ability to inspire his teammates with his flair and X-factor. Meanwhile, Richmond’s list boss, Blair Hartley, acknowledged Bolton’s contributions to the club’s recent success and expressed gratitude for his impact during his time with the Tigers.

Bolton, originally from Western Australia, had expressed a desire to return home despite his long-term contract with Richmond. Both clubs worked together to find a deal that benefited all parties, ensuring a smooth transition for the star player as he begins a new chapter in his career with the Dockers.
