Just in: Everton in pursuit of spurs talented key defender after Postecoglou admission

Everton could make move for Japhet Tanganga after Postecoglou admission

Everton could be set to make a move to sign Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga, after Ange Postecoglou admitted “four or five” players are listed for sale, via Sky Sports.

With the transfer window set to close in less than a week’s time, there is still a clearout to take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Everton could take advantage of the availability of one of their transfer targets.

Tanganga has been linked with a move to Goodison Park [InterLive, 21 August], as it was shared that he would prefer to stay in England despite interest from Inter Milan, with newly promoted Luton Town also looking to do a deal.

The Tottenham manager spoke to Sky Sports on 28 August, reported via their Transfer Centre website [12:00], where he stated: “We’ve got five or six players more than we can name on a list so all these things come down to decisions that people make, whether it’s an individual player or myself, and we’ve got four or five who are in that boat.”

Tanganga is listed among other players including Djed Spence, Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier, Sergio Reguilon, Davinson Sanchez and Tanguy Ndombele as expected departures as the transfer window draws closer to its end on 1 September.

The defender was highly thought of at Spurs when he first made his breakthrough into the first team, originally in the 2019/20 season and continuing across the next couple of seasons between 2020 and 2022, but has fallen out of favour recently and looks likely to leave in the coming days.

The defender thrived under both Jose Mourinho, who gave him his breakthrough, and Antonio Conte in a back-three system, where he played as the wider right-sided centre-back. However, he was also used occasionally as a right-back in a four and was able to fill in that role well.Everton transfer news as update emerges on Tottenham ace Tanganga

It is unclear which he regards as his best position, but having a player who is versatile enough to play either in the middle or wide in the defence is always a boost, particularly if they are a covering option rather than a regular first-team starter.

Sean Dyche’s side could benefit from new recruits in several positions, so any incoming transfers will be a welcome bonus to the side that has struggled so far this season.
