Everton boosted in pursuit of Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga as Torino move collapses
Everton appear to have received a boost in their pursuit of Japhet Tanganga as the defender’s loan move from Tottenham to Torino has reportedly collapsed.
Charlie Eccleshare reported on The Athletic’s transfer blog on Wednesday [30 August, 15:34] that an agreement could not be reached between the two clubs.
Everton and fellow Premier League side Luton Town are also in the running to sign Tanganga, as are Ligue 1 outfit Lyon [Calciomercato].
Tottenham are looking to trim their squad ahead of the 11pm deadline on Friday [1 September], and Tanganga is one of those who is not part of manager Ange Postecoglou’s immediate plans.
While Tanganga may not yet be an elite-level defender – hence why Spurs are looking to offload – he will at least provide Sean Dyche with another option in what is a leaky defence.
The Toffees have shipped six goals in their opening three Premier League matches – only Luton (seven) have conceded more – so it is an area Dyche could do with addressing.
Time is clearly not on Everton’s side, having seemingly put all their energy into landing Beto, and Tanganga appears to be as good an option as the Merseyside outfit are going to get at this stage.
Tanganga is capable of playing centre-back or right-back, with that versatility in the backline always handy, and he also has reasonable Premier League experience, having played 27 times in the competition for Spurs.
If nothing else, Tanganga is a solid option to provide cover while others return from injury or simply adapt to life in the top flight.
Hopefully for Everton, Torino’s loss will be their gain if Goodison chiefs can strike a deal with Tottenham.
In other Everton news, the frontrunners to sign Alex Iwobi have been named.
