The unsung Browns hero on Myles Garrett’s leaping blocked field goal and more observations

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Browns defensive end Myles Garrett is getting the headlines after his blocked field goal on Sunday. It makes sense. He basically did a box jump over another human being.

There was another player who played an important role in the whole thing, too — Shelby Harris.

Yes, the play call was to have someone jump over the line of scrimmage.

Watch the play again and there’s Harris in the middle, clearing the way for Garrett’s leap and protecting Garrett from a very unfortunate situation had the lineman been able to just stand up.

“Everyone had to do their job,” Harris said. “It’s something that they wanted to stay low on their field goal. They wanted to make sure that we couldn’t get any push out of there. And so it opened it up for the jump and Myles executed it beautifully and we ended up making the play.”

It was nothing new for Harris.
“You got to think about it though, I’ve done this before with Justin Simmons when I was at the Broncos,” he said, “and it takes a really athletic guy just to be able to go out there one step, jump it and clear it, have the balance to gather yourself and then go block it.”
