Abingdon, Virginia, is set to see an exciting new recreational project take shape, as the town council recently approved a $300,000 investment for building new tennis and pickleball courts. The decision came last Wednesday after a council vote aimed at fostering a partnership with the Washington County School Board. This collaboration envisions the courts being located near the Washington County School System’s central office, making them accessible to both the community and local schools.

Previously, the Washington County School Board had considered a proposal to build up to six tennis courts equipped with lighting, with an estimated project cost reaching $1.2 million. During an October meeting, Superintendent Keith Perrigan expressed interest in discussing potential collaboration with town officials. The council’s support has now brought that vision a step closer, aligning with the goal of creating multi-use courts for both tennis and the increasingly popular game of pickleball.

Abingdon Town Manager Mike Cochran expressed enthusiasm for the dual-purpose courts, emphasizing the rise of pickleball’s popularity. “Pickleball is more popular than eating, I believe,” Cochran joked, highlighting that the town would have shared access to two of the new courts. Additionally, the new location near the vocational center and central office provides ample parking, offering convenience for players and spectators alike.

The funds for this project were allocated from a surplus remaining from the previous fiscal year. According to Cochran, community members are eager for the project to begin and are less concerned about its funding source, saying residents simply want access to quality recreational facilities.

Town leaders and school board members alike see this as a valuable partnership. School Board member Lee Brannon expressed gratitude to the council, calling the collaboration beneficial for both entities. Abingdon’s Mayor Amanda Pillion echoed these sentiments, highlighting the smooth cooperation between the town and the school board. With both sides committed, the new courts promise to bring more opportunities for sports and connection to the community.
