Joe Richards, the newly acquired forward for Port Adelaide, has opened up about his uncertainties regarding his AFL career before making the transition from Collingwood. During an interview with Mitch Cleary from Channel 7, Richards revealed that comments made by his former coach, Craig McRae, nearly convinced him to remain with the Magpies.

At the conclusion of the last season, the 24-year-old found himself reflecting on his future in the sport. “I reached the end of last year feeling uncertain about my position and had some doubts surface,” Richards admitted. However, he acknowledged that the past year has turned out favorably for him. His journey to Port Adelaide was part of a complex three-team trade that also included Gold Coast, resulting in the movement of several players among the clubs.

Richards had shown promise during his time at Collingwood, where he played nine games at the AFL level and delivered impressive performances in the VFL. He earned the Harry Collier Trophy as the best young player at the Magpies, and McRae’s admiration for Richards’ intelligence and potential was well-known within the club. During the Magpies’ Best & Fairest night, McRae praised him as a “real smart, young player” and expressed excitement about his future in a Collingwood jersey.

Reflecting on McRae’s encouraging words, Richards shared, “At that moment, I was still undecided… his comments made me lean towards staying with Collingwood.” Despite this, the long-term interest from Port Adelaide, coupled with a three-year contract offer, ultimately influenced his decision to request a trade.

Before joining Collingwood in 2022, Richards had played for the Wangaratta Magpies in the Ovens & Murray League. Port Adelaide recognized his potential and welcomed him to their roster, with list manager Jason Cripps noting that Richards is a clever footballer with speed and a solid forward game. For Richards, this move to Port Adelaide represents a fresh start and a valuable opportunity to establish himself in the AFL.
