The Los Angeles Lakers sent an aggressive recruiting push to Klay Thompson, but Kyrie Irving, a secret weapon for the Dallas Mavericks, stopped LeBron James.
The Lakers and Mavericks were fighting for Thompson’s services when free agency opened. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN claims that James gave Thompson a call as soon as free agency began. Additionally, James’ camp disclosed to the public that Thompson was a player with whom he would be content to share a salary.
Five-time all-star Thompson visited with both parties before to making a decision. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Irving’s presence turned out to be a major element in the discussions.
Thompson was eventually acquired by the Mavericks as part of a multi-team sign-and-trade agreement for a three-year, $50 million contract. Playing for a Dallas team that had recently advanced to the NBA Finals and state taxes had an impact on Thompson’s choice.
The possibility of winning a fifth title with the Mavs plus the difference in state taxes made Thompson accept a lower offer despite having four-year offers for more money, according to Wojnarowski. “Wasserman Basketball agent Greg Lawrence led Thompson in serious talks with the Lakers and Mavs, among others.”
The Lakers reportedly wanted to offer Thompson a contract for $80 million over four years.
