In a heartfelt announcement, Brooke Lochland, the inaugural co-captain of the Sydney Swans, has decided to retire from AFLW, marking the end of her impressive nine-year career. This weekend’s match at Henson Park will be her final game, bringing a significant chapter to a close for the talented forward. At 33, Lochland has made a substantial impact on the league, having played 64 games split between the Western Bulldogs and the Sydney Swans.

Lochland began her career when she was drafted by the Western Bulldogs at pick 53 in the 2016 National Draft. She made her debut in 2017 and quickly established herself as a standout player. By 2018, she not only became an All-Australian but also clinched a premiership title and led the league in goal-scoring. Her record for the most goals in a single game—seven—still holds today, highlighting her extraordinary skill on the field.

In mid-2022, Lochland made a pivotal move to Sydney, becoming the first marquee player to join the newly established Swans in the AFLW. Her leadership qualities shone through as she became an inaugural co-captain, guiding her team both on and off the field. Her contributions were evident as she emerged as the leading goal-scorer for the Swans in 2022, solidifying her legacy within the club.

Reflecting on her journey, Lochland expressed immense gratitude to her teammates and mentors. She reminisced about her childhood dreams, recalling how as a six-year-old, she never imagined she would one day be drafted into an AFL club. Lochland thanked the Western Bulldogs for nurturing her talent and providing her with the opportunity to excel. She also praised her time with the Swans, highlighting how the decision to join the team has been one of the best of her life, enriched by the support of incredible teammates and devoted fans.
