The Boston Celtics can target veterans cut in training camp from rebuilding teams according to MassLive’s Brian Robb — who answered a question from a reader who specifically referenced recently-acquired expiring contracts on the San Antonio Spurs capsheet like Cedi Osman and Reggie Bullock.

“I think that’s the most likely path at this point,” Robb wrote. “Any other player the team brings in for training camp now probably comes up on a small guaranteed or non-guaranteed deal. There are going to be a lot of respectable players cut in the next month and the Celtics have positioned themselves well to make themselves an appealing destination from a couple standpoints. They can cut loose players in the backcourt or frontcourt without major financial ramifications and there is also a path for spot minutes in a few spots on the roster. That opportunity could appeal for a player who wants to play for a contender.”

In the case of Osman and Bullock, there’d be a need filled on the C’s wing at a prove-it value; ideal for all parties involved since both players would get their salary for the 2023-24 season in any buyout scenario.

Point guard may or may not be a position of need for the Boston Celtics in free agency

With Oshae Brissett in tow, and Sam Hauser still in the second unit, it feels like the point guard spot is the one the Boston Celtics need to address in free agency. Not so much the wing position.

But maybe it’s not. It all depends on whether Malcolm Brogdon’s situation following his near-trade to the Los Angeles Clippers in the first accepted Kristaps Porzingis proposal can be resolved by the start of the season and if Payton Pritchard is ready to put his own trade request behind him.

Once those questions are answered, the Cs can assess whether Derrick White and whoever is behind him on the depth chart at PG is enough and can focus their free agent attention elsewhere.
