The news, initially reported by Brian Dick at Birmingham Mail, signals the end of Long’s 13-month tenure at Birmingham, as he prepares to embark on a new chapter with the Canadian side. The transfer is set to be complete and announce early next week.
The 33-year-old Irish defender, who arrived at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park on a free transfer from Burnley in January last year, played a pivotal role under John Eustace, helping the blues avoid entering a relegation battle. However, he fell out of favour under Wayne Rooney’s management, and pick up an injury during Rooney’s tenure. He’s been in and out of the squad under current boss Tony Mowbray.
He was absent from the squad in blues’ last game, a 2-1 victory against Sunderland. Blues has options at the centre-half department, with Bielik now play at the back, captain Dion Sanderson set to return from Injury, Marc Roberts’ been playing more games lately, as well as other options like Emanuel Aiwu. While fullbacks Cody Drameh and Lee Buchanan can also play the centre-half role if needed.
During his time with Birmingham City, Kevin Long made 40 appearances in all competitions, contributing with two goals. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, now he is set to join Toronto FC. The Reds, who are in the final stages of preparing for the upcoming MLS season and have one more preseason match left & are led by Englishman John Herdman, are gearing up for their first game on 25th February against Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference.
Toronto FC had a challenging season in 2023, finishing at the bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference and occuped the 29th place out of all 29 teams in the overall league table. With aspirations for a better showing in the new season, the Canadian side is hoping that the addition of Kevin Long will bolster their much needed defensive capabilities, in which recently the manager stated his desire to get new players in time for the new season, stating:
Interestingly, Long is not the only Birmingham player making the transatlantic move. Young defender Nico Gordon also departed after the deadline day, securing a place with MLS Next Pro club North Texas SC, the feeder club for FC Dallas.
Kevin Long leaves the club with a positive legacy, having earned considerable playing time and the respect of both fans and teammates. Although his transfer comes unexpectedly, Birmingham City and its players will undoubtedly extend their heartfelt well-wishes, expressing confidence in his success with Toronto FC in the MLS.
