Leeds United news: Tottenham Hotspur transfer ‘talks’ for Djed Spence start as Leicester defender targeted

Leeds United headlines as the Whites continue their transfer pursuit before deadline day

Spence talks begin

Leeds United have been linked with a move for Djed Spence for a number of weeks now. Talk of a potential deal has escalated in the last 24 hours, with Leeds reportedly having now held tentative discussions surrounding the player. No offer is on the table for the right-back at this stage, with Tottenham Hotspur happy to let the player go after he struggled to make an impact at Spurs.

Having previously impressed in helping Nottingham Forest win promotion, Spence’s career has stalled since he rejected an opportunity to sign for Forest permanently from Middlesbrough, instead opting to go to Spurs. Just four substitute appearances have followed since the start of last season and now the defender is all set to depart.

Spence’s exit now seems certain, his destination less so right now. Leeds have not tabled an offer, while several clubs both domestic and in Europe are tracking the situation and waiting in the wings to make a potential bid.

A new left-back

Leeds may be looking at Djed Spence to come in and play right-back, but how about a new left-back thrown into the mix too? Sam Byram has done well in the position so far this season, but picked up an injury at the weekend against Ipswich Town. Junior Firpo will be back soon, also, but Leeds are looking at both Leicester City defender Luke Thomas and Burnley’s Charlie Taylor according to the Athletic.

Thomas has fallen out of favour under Enzo Maresca and would be seen as a shrewd signing in picking up a young defender with Premier League experience.

Rodon feeling the love

Joe Rodon is finally feeling wanted again after a tricky spell at Tottenham Hotspur left him feeling ‘on his own’. The Welsh defender left the North London club to join Leeds United on loan until the end of the season, having spent the last campaign with French side Stade Rennais.

The 25-year-old owes much of the new-found warmth he’s feeling to Leeds manager Daniel Farke, with the Wales international praising the German’s ability to unite the Elland Road dressing room after a turbulent summer.

“When it’s time to work, it’s time to work. You have to focus and be on it, and if you’re not, you have to be told. When it’s time to relax and be calm and have a joke, that’s what the boss does and that’s what we do. It’s important to have that balance of the profession and being relaxed,” said Rodon.

Summerville return?

Crysencio Summerville could be given the green light to make his playing return on Tuesday night as Leeds United travel to Salford City in the Carabao Cup. The Whites will make the journey across the Pennines in high spirits after picking up their first league win of the campaign on Saturday at Ipswich Town.

Summerville was named on the bench at Portman Road after making progress on his return from a groin strain, but Daniel Farke was cautious about bringing him into the fray and allowed the Dutchman to watch the entire contest from the sidelines. However, the manager will make changes as Leeds switch gears to take on League Two Salford in the cup and he admits Summerville could be in line for his first appearance since a last minute equaliser on the opening day of the campaign.
