Alan Shearer pinpoints the exact moment Aston Villa went ‘downhill’ against Newcastle United
Pundit Alan Shearer believes Aston Villa were derailed by Tyrone Mings’ injury during their 5-1
defeat at Newcastle United on Saturday.
The Villans suffered their heaviest-ever opening-day defeat as Unai Emery’s side got off to the
worst possible start in their opening game of the new season.
But Villa had looked competitive in the first half when new signing Moussa Diaby got the Villans
back into the game when the winger equalised shortly after Sandro Tonali’s opener early on.
However, defender Mings had to be stretchered off injured soon after the Magpies had made it 2-1.
The 30-year-old looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines with Emery confirming after the game
that “it doesn’t look good”.
And Newcastle legend Shearer thinks that the momentum of the match changed irreversibly for
Villa after losing their influential centre-back. Villa were overwhelmed in the second half as they
shipped three goals without reply.
“I thought they were really affected by the injury to Mings,” Shearer told Match of the Day.
“I think they were well in the game until that happened and you could see them go downhill after
that.”
Villa will have to lick their wounds and move on quickly from a chastening evening at St James’
Park. Emery’s team are next in action against Everton at Villa Park on Sunday, August 20 (kick-off: 2:00pm).
