A lack of “respect” has prompted the 31-year-old striker to consider quitting his international career, and he has hinted that he may even leave Atletico Madrid when he is at Euro 2024 with his country.
Alvaro Morata has made suggestions that Euro 2024 will be his final competition with Spain and that he will be leaving Atletico Madrid this summer.
The 31-year-old attacker is expected to start for his squad against France on Tuesday in their semifinal match. He has played in four of his team’s five games in Germany, scoring in the victory over Croatia.
“It could be [my last tournament with Spain],” he stated in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Mundo.
“It’s a possibility that I don’t want to talk about too much, but it’s probable.”
At Euro 2020 and in a friendly match between Real Madrid and Brazil at the Bernabeu earlier this year, supporters of the national squad whistled Morata.
The forward told the newspaper that he found playing in La Liga challenging. He has played for Real, Juventus, Chelsea, and Atletico.
“It’s difficult for me to be happy in Spain,” stated Morata. “I’m definitely happier outside of Spain.” As I’ve said numerous times. Mostly because I’m respected by others. There is no regard for anything or anyone in Spain.”
“What absurdity is that! I was crying because I was the captain of my country and we had advanced to the semifinals. That’s why I could never be critical of someone who was sobbing. However, I receive criticism for chopping off my hand to win the Euros.”
“I try to enjoy this tournament, which could be my last games with the national team, and in the future, what will be, will be,” he stated. Maybe they’ll even miss me in the future. I adore it, I cry, and I’ll cry at whatever comes next, good or bad, since the time to leave is becoming closer every day.”
Morata recently expressed his desire to win trophies with his present team, but he questioned whether that would be possible while thinking about leaving.
It’s not nice, he stated. I’ve expressed my desire to win trophies with Atletico, but you have to consider whether it’s worth it.
