At the Paris Olympics 2024, Chinese shuttler Huang Ya Qiong had a spectacular moment on Friday, August 2. She won the mixed doubles gold medal with her partner Zheng Siwei, defeating Kim Won-ho and Jeong Na-eun of South Korea.
Following his victory in the mixed doubles final with scores of 21-8, 21-11, Huang was asked to marry Li Yuchen, another member of the Chinese badminton squad.
Through an interpreter, Huang remarked, “For me, the proposal is very surprising because I have been preparing for the game.” “Today I am an Olympic champion and I got proposed (to), so that’s something I didn’t expect.”
China’s Dominance in Mixed Doubles
at mixed doubles badminton, China has frequently performed well at the Olympics. They have now won gold in five of the last eight Olympics and eight times overall since it was added to the medal schedule in Atlanta in 1996. After winning gold in Tokyo with Huang Dong Ping, who in Paris partnered with Feng Yan Zhe but lost to Zheng and Huang in the quarterfinals, Wang Yilyu retired.
Throughout the competition, Huang and Zheng, who won silver medals at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, were unbeaten. They ended with a perfect 6-0 record without dropping a game, securing the top spot for the quarterfinals with a 3-0 group stage record. After losing in the final, Zheng said he got engaged three years ago and thought it was a better experience for his girlfriend looking back on their trip.
