The New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF) and Northwood School are thrilled to announce the appointment of Thomas Vonn as the new Alpine Technical Director. This role strengthens the longstanding partnership between these two esteemed organizations, aiming to elevate their alpine program and foster athlete development at the highest level. According to NYSEF Executive Director John Norton, “The collaboration between NYSEF and Northwood School has created a strong pathway for young alpine athletes to pursue their ambitions. We are excited to welcome Thomas, a proud alumnus of NYSEF, who has achieved great success in his skiing career.”

A graduate of the Class of 1994 from NYSEF/Northwood, Vonn went on to attend Saint Lawrence University, where he continued his journey in alpine skiing. He represented the U.S. Ski Team from 1997 to 2005 and competed in the 2002 Winter Olympics. His time on the World Cup circuit ignited a passion for coaching and athlete development, leading him to this new position. “I am eager to return to Lake Placid, where my ski racing journey began, and contribute to the development of future champions,” Vonn expressed.

In his capacity as Alpine Technical Director, Vonn plans to leverage his extensive experience in World Cup and Olympic competition to set ambitious goals for the program. Terry DelliQuadri, Northwood’s Alpine Program Director, shared his enthusiasm for Vonn’s addition to the team, highlighting the mutual goal of guiding athletes toward national and international success. Vonn’s leadership is expected to elevate the training standards, pushing both coaches and athletes to maximize their potential during every training session.

Vonn’s coaching experience includes a decade-long mentorship of Olympic and World Cup champion Lindsey Vonn, during which she secured medals at the Vancouver Olympic Games. His expertise extends to consulting for the U.S. Ski Team and coaching aspiring athletes from various countries. Northwood Headmaster Michael Maher remarked on Vonn’s exemplary track record, noting his ability to serve as a role model not only for alpine athletes but for the entire NYSEF/Northwood community.

As the organizations embark on this exciting chapter, Vonn’s meticulous attention to detail and his commitment to excellence promise to enhance the already impressive training facilities at Whiteface. The relationship between NYSEF and Northwood has always been a collaborative one, and Vonn’s involvement is a testament to the quality of support and resources available to their athletes. “Our athletes have followed Thomas’s illustrious career, and we are thrilled to have him play an active role in shaping the future of skiing in our region,” stated Greg Harden, Chairman of NYSEF. Vonn looks forward to reconnecting with old friends and inspiring the next generation of ski racers. He is set to begin his journey with the organizations this summer, participating in ski camps in Europe while preparing for the upcoming season.
