Ghana Secures Hosting Rights for 2026 African Athletics Championships

On June 22, 2024, the bid was made public after the CAA General Assembly in Douala, Cameroon, cast its vote.
Ghana secured 12 votes out of the 15 countries that participated in the voting process, while Botswana managed only three votes. This decisive victory highlights Ghana’s impressive infrastructure and capabilities, which were showcased during the successful hosting of the 2023 African Games and the CAA Region II Seniors Championships.

A delegation comprising key officials from Ghana’s athletics governing body, including Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) Bawa Majeed, President of Ghana Athletics Bawah Fuseini, and Vice President Charles Osei Assibey, played a crucial role in spearheading Ghana’s bid. Their efforts were instrumental in convincing the CAA members of Ghana’s ability to deliver an exceptional event.

Ghana’s state-of-the-art facilities, which were highlighted during the 2023 African Games and the CAA Region II Seniors Championships, were a major factor in the country’s winning bid. These facilities demonstrate Ghana’s commitment to providing world-class infrastructure for athletes and spectators alike.

With this achievement, Ghana is poised to deliver another outstanding event in 2026, further solidifying its status as a leading host of major athletic competitions in Africa. The country’s athletes are also expected to benefit from the exposure and experience of hosting such a prestigious event.

In the ongoing championships, three Ghanaian athletes have advanced to the semi-finals of the 100m events. Isaac Botsio and Edwin Gadayi secured their places in the men’s 100m, while Deborah Acheampong advanced in the women’s 100m. These performances demonstrate Ghana’s growing strength in athletics and the potential for future success.
