Gabby Newton Finds Her Home at Fremantle

Gabby Newton has integrated effortlessly into Fremantle’s lineup, both on and off the field. The talented young player recently shared insights on her transition, highlighting the pivotal moment she recognized Fremantle as her new home.

After being traded from the Western Bulldogs in December, Newton made the move from Melbourne to Perth in January. During a recent episode of the Club’s Rollers & The Rockers Podcast, she opened up about her journey, including the challenges posed by a back injury in her early months.

“Building connections with others is crucial to me,” Newton remarked. “There was this moment when I thought, ‘Wow, these teammates are amazing,’ and I felt driven to push myself just as hard as they push each other. Their dedication truly inspired me, which is essential for my growth.”

Newton also reflected on the warm reception she received upon her arrival in Perth, emphasizing how the Club’s values resonated with her own. “I was really drawn to the Club because of its identity and what it stands for, not just for the players but for everyone involved. It’s powerful and meaningful, but what truly matters are the actions that accompany those words.”

She recalled how numerous teammates reached out to her, even organizing a trip down south shortly after her arrival, which made her feel genuinely welcomed. “From the community team to everyone in management, their efforts made me realize that I had found my new family here,” she said. “While I’ve had to sacrifice time with my own family and friends, this experience has given me a new support system.”

Moreover, Newton praised Senior Coach Lisa Webb and Head of AFLW Claire Heffernan for their significant roles in her adjustment to the Club. “Words can’t express how much they mean to me,” she explained. “Living with Claire, who is an amazing cook, meant I was treated like royalty during my first few weeks here. She was there for me during my injury, and her support was invaluable.”

Reflecting on her time with Webb, Newton noted, “She’s one of the smartest coaches I’ve ever encountered, and I always appreciated our discussions about the game. Her approach fosters a strong connection among the team, making this journey even more special.” With a sense of gratitude, Newton expressed her excitement about the future, stating, “It’s been an incredible eight months. I can’t believe how quickly it’s gone, and I’m genuinely happy to be here.”
