Fremantle has showcased resilience and skill, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Geelong by 18 points, solidifying their position in third place on the AFLW ladder. The game began with Geelong controlling the pace, managing to register the first six minor scores before Fremantle found their rhythm. It wasn’t until the second quarter that Fremantle scored their first goal, thanks to a sharp snap from Tunisha Kikoak amidst a crowded contest.
Standout player Hayley Miller contributed significantly to the team’s success, adding another quick goal shortly after. In her post-match remarks, Miller highlighted the strategic adjustments made during the game. “We rearranged a few things to counter their wide plays, which allowed our midfielders to push forward effectively and capitalize on scoring opportunities,” she noted.
Despite entering halftime trailing with a 21-10 disadvantage in inside 50s, Fremantle shifted momentum in the second half. They turned the statistics around to finish with a 32-30 edge in inside 50s, marking their fourth consecutive win. The intensity and pressure exerted by Fremantle increased notably, with Aisling McCarthy and Miller both asserting their presence on the field. “Having them on my team is invaluable,” said Sarah Verrier, another key player in the match, who also expressed pride in her teammates’ efforts.
Fremantle’s defense was particularly impressive, holding Geelong to just one goal in the second half. McCarthy capped off her exceptional performance with a late goal, complementing her impressive stats of 29 disposals, seven clearances, and six tackles. “We adjusted our structure at halftime, which made a significant difference,” Verrier reflected after the game.
This victory also marked a triumphant return for Mikayla Morrison, who played her first match in over 900 days after recovering from two ACL injuries. Her teammates celebrated her comeback, with Verrier expressing, “We’ve only played a few games together since being drafted, but we’re all incredibly proud of her resilience and thrilled to have her back on the field.”
Looking ahead, Fremantle faces another quick turnaround as they prepare to take on Hawthorn on Sunday, October 6, at Fremantle Oval. Verrier emphasized the importance of recovery and getting back to their fundamentals: “I’m looking forward to playing at home again; it’s going to be great.”
