Shai Bolton is now a Docker.

Fremantle has pulled off a significant trade, securing star player Shai Bolton from Richmond. This deal represents a major step for the Dockers as they aim to strengthen their roster following a disappointing season that saw them miss out on the finals in 2024. Bolton, who is 25 years old, will be returning to Western Australia, and in exchange, the Dockers have agreed to send Richmond their picks No. 10, 11, and 18. Richmond, in turn, will provide pick No. 14 and a future third-round selection to Fremantle.

The trade was finalized on Wednesday morning, receiving the necessary approval from the AFL in the afternoon. With this transaction, Richmond has acquired a notable set of draft picks, which positions them for a strong showing in the upcoming draft. They now hold an impressive lineup of selections, including picks 1, 10, 11, 18, 20, and 24. There’s potential for additional picks as well, depending on ongoing negotiations with Gold Coast regarding Daniel Rioli.

Shai Bolton has agreed to a five-year contract with Fremantle, which will keep him with the team until the end of the 2029 season. This acquisition is seen as a substantial boost for the Dockers, who are eager to enhance their performance next year. David Walls, Fremantle’s list boss, expressed enthusiasm for the new signing, highlighting Bolton’s skills in ball use, creativity, and speed. He believes that Bolton’s flair and ability to break through defensive lines will be crucial for the team’s success.

Bolton’s background as a two-time premiership player and his recognition as an All-Australian in 2022 further underline his talent. His consistent performance has been evident, finishing among Richmond’s best players for the past five seasons. Despite his long-term commitment to Richmond, Bolton expressed a desire to return to his home state, prompting the trade request that both clubs ultimately accommodated.

Richmond’s list boss, Blair Hartley, acknowledged Bolton’s impact on the club and expressed understanding regarding his decision to move back to Western Australia. While recognizing the importance of securing a beneficial trade for both sides, Hartley expressed excitement about the improved draft position for Richmond, setting them up for future success. The Tigers bid farewell to a player who has played a pivotal role in their achievements and wish him and his family well as they embark on this new chapter in Perth.
